Call for Active Learning Faculty Fellowship program, 2018-19
In Spring 2017, The Claremont Colleges Library received a grant from Steelcase Education to transform one of our traditional instructional spaces, the Keck Learning Room, into an “Active Learning Center.” As part of this grant, the library and The Claremont Colleges Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) are partnering to launch an Active Learning Faculty Fellowship Program for the 2018-19 academic year.
This yearlong fellowship will bring together a cohort of faculty from across the colleges who will be introduced to core concepts of active learning pedagogy and then teach a semester long course in the library’s recently renovated classroom to incorporate active learning techniques. The first semester of the fellowship, in Fall 2018, will involve completing a pre-fellowship questionnaire and attending a day-long “Introduction to Active Learning” workshop led by Jessica Tinklenberg, Program Director of the CTL (date TBD). The rest of the semester will be spent planning and designing activities to be implemented in Spring 2019.
In the second semester, Spring 2019, fellows will have the opportunity to teach a semester long class in the library’s classroom. Fellows will assess student learning to determine whether the active learning approaches they’ve introduced have an impact. At the end of the semester, fellows will be asked to complete a post-teaching reflection as well as a post-fellowship questionnaire. Throughout both semesters there will be opportunities to meet on a monthly basis to collaborate and receive feedback on teaching, research projects, and get recommendations on instructional design. Individual consultations with the CTL director and faculty co-directors, librarians, and Digital Humanities staff will also be available.
